街を歩いていると、つい会社の看板に目で追う癖がある。これはリコーでコピー機を売っていた頃から身についたもので、今も変わらない習慣だ。テレビCMを見れば、その企業について調べてしまうし、企業紹介の番組で気になる社長が出ていれば、つい電話してしまう。Googleニュースで面白い記事を見つければ、その経営者をSNSで探してアタックする。もはや条件反射に近い日々のルーチンである。

知的探究心と言えば聞こえはいいが、要は単純に面白いからやっている。この世にはどんな会社があり、どんな社長がいるのか。それを知りたい。知れば知るほど、何が成長の要因で、どこに課題があるのかが見えてくる。

社長という人種は実に面白い。自分もその一人だからこそよくわかるが、変わり者が多い。そして、そうならざるを得なかった背景がある。倒産を乗り越えた人。乗っ取りにあった人。裏切られた人。特殊技術を開花させた人。どん底で人に助けられた人。ひとつのことを地道に続けた人。天命を知り心血を注ぐ人。話すたび、出会うたび、学びと感動がある。そして彼らと向き合うたび、自分はどうあるべきかを問われている気がする。

ゆるストイックな生き方

そんな中、最近知った『ゆるストイック』という考え方に深く共感した。ストイック＝自分を律する姿勢と、ゆるさ＝他者や自分への寛容さ。この一見相反するものを両立させることが、今の時代に必要なのだと感じた。変化の激しい時代において、ただ厳しさで突き進むだけでは、心も体も持たない。一方で、ただ緩く流されるだけでは「働かないおじさん」になってしまう危うさがあるそうだ。

大切なのは、自分でコントロールできることに集中し、他者の価値観も尊重しながら、自分のペースで継続すること。それが「ゆるストイック」な生き方であり、まさに今の私が志している道である。経営者とは、時代の先を読みながら、自らの信念を貫く存在だ。だからこそ、柔軟であって強く、優しくあって厳しくある必要がある。

When I walk around town, I have a habit of involuntarily looking at company signs. It's a habit I picked up when I sold copy machines for Ricoh, and it hasn't changed. If I see a TV commercial, I end up researching the company, and if a president catches my attention on a company profile show, I can't help but call them. If I find an interesting article on Google News, I'll search for the executive on social media and reach out. It's almost a conditioned reflex in my daily routine.

You could call it intellectual curiosity, but really, I just find it interesting. I want to know what kinds of companies and presidents exist in the world. The more I learn, the more I understand the factors driving growth and the challenges they face.

Presidents are a fascinating breed. I know this well because I'm one myself—they tend to be unique individuals. And there's always a backstory behind why they became that way: those who overcame bankruptcy, those who faced hostile takeovers, those who were betrayed, those who unlocked a specialized technology, those who were helped by others at their lowest point, those who steadily pursued a single goal, those who knew their calling and poured their heart and soul into it. A business leader must read the signs of the times while staying true to their own convictions. Therefore, they need to be both flexible and strong, gentle and strict.
