怪談話によく使われるこのフレーズを耳にすると、私は今でも何故か背筋に冷たいものを感じる。経営者として日々様々な課題に直面する中で、人間の抱く恐怖の本質について考えることがある。
人にとって恐怖の源泉は何なのだろう？
その答えは意外にも単純だ。それは未知であること、すなわち知らないということだ。子どもの頃に恐かったものが大人になってだんだん無くなっていくのは、経験を重ね、知識を蓄積していくからに他ならない。
例えば、かつて恐ろしく感じていたお化け屋敷も、その仕組みを知れば恐怖心は薄れていく。どのように運営され、スタッフがどんな趣向を凝らして来場者を驚かすのかを理解すれば、もはや怖くはなくなるのだ。様々な怪奇現象も、理論的に解明されその仕組みがわかれば恐ろしさは消え去る。つまり、知らないことが恐怖の源泉であるならば、知識を得ることは人生における盾にも武器にもなり得るのだ。
この原理は、ビジネスの世界にも当てはまる。毎朝NHKで放送される「ストップ詐欺被害」という啓蒙活動がある。これだけ広く周知されているにもかかわらず、毎年膨大な被害額が報告されている。これは、知識の欠如が引き起こす悲劇の一例と言えるだろう。
知識の獲得は、ビジネスの成功への近道でもある。税の専門知識を学び国家資格を取得する道もあれば、年配の経営者の相談に乗るうちに事業承継のスペシャリストとして成功を収める道もある。私自身、様々な分野の知識が経営の場面で役立った経験が数多くある。
私は常に、知らないことを知る努力を怠らないようにしている。ニュースを見て理解できない点があれば、必ず調べるようにしている。歴史や宇宙に関する番組を視聴した際には、未知の用語をウィキペディアで確認する習慣がある。もちろん、全てを完璧に理解することは不可能だ。しかし、気づいたときに少しずつ学んでいけば、「塵も積もれば山となる」のことわざ通り、やがては物知りと呼ばれるようになる。
この姿勢は、経営者としての武器にもなる。新しい市場動向や技術トレンドを常に学び続けることで、ビジネスチャンスを逃さず、リスクを最小限に抑えることができるのだ。
一定の年齢を重ねると、知らないことに対する恐怖と同時に、新しいことを学ぶことへの躊躇いも感じるようになる。しかし、私は経営者として、そして一個人として、いくつになっても未知なるものへの興味を持ち続けたい。
そうすることが、ビジネスの世界で生き残る術であり、同時に老いへの恐怖に立ち向かう最強の武器になるのではないだろうか。知識を得ることは、単なる自己満足ではない。それは、未知なる世界への扉を開く鍵であり、恐怖を打ち払う光明なのだ。
今日も、丑三つ時の静寂の中で、未知なる世界への好奇心を胸に、新たな知識を求め続ける。それは恐怖との闘いであり、同時に成長への道でもある。この営みこそが、私の経営を、そして人生を豊かにしていくのだと信じている。

This phrase, often used in ghost stories, still sends a chill down my spine. As a business leader facing daily challenges, I find myself reflecting on the nature of human fear.
What is the source of fear for people?
The answer is surprisingly simple: it is the unknown—essentially, not knowing. The reason things that frightened us as children become less terrifying as we grow older is that we accumulate experience and knowledge.
For example, a haunted house that once seemed terrifying gradually loses its grip on our fear once we understand its inner workings. When we learn how it's operated, how staff plan to scare visitors with different tactics, the fear fades away. Similarly, once supernatural phenomena are explained scientifically and we understand the mechanics behind them, the terror evaporates. If fear stems from ignorance, then gaining knowledge can serve as both a shield and a weapon in life.
This principle applies equally in the business world. Every morning, NHK broadcasts a public awareness segment called “Stop Fraud Victims,” aimed at preventing scams. Despite these widespread efforts, staggering amounts of money are still lost to fraud each year. This is a tragic example of how ignorance can lead to disaster.
Acquiring knowledge is also a fast track to business success. Some take the path of studying tax laws and earning national certifications, while others excel in business succession by advising older business owners. I have personally experienced countless moments where knowledge from various fields has proven invaluable in my business endeavors.
I always strive to learn what I don’t know. If I come across something in the news that I don’t fully understand, I make sure to research it. When I watch programs about history or the universe, I make it a habit to look up unfamiliar terms on Wikipedia. Of course, it’s impossible to understand everything perfectly, but by learning little by little whenever possible, it’s like the saying goes: "Many drops make a shower." Eventually, one might even be considered well-versed in a range of subjects.
This mindset is a powerful tool for a business leader. By constantly learning about new market trends and technological developments, I can seize business opportunities and minimize risks.
As we grow older, fear of the unknown often grows alongside a reluctance to learn new things. However, as a business leader and as an individual, I want to keep my curiosity alive, no matter how old I become.
By doing so, I believe we can not only survive in the business world but also confront the fear of aging. Gaining knowledge is not merely an act of self-satisfaction—it is the key to unlocking doors to new worlds and dispelling fear.
Even tonight, in the dead of night, I continue to seek new knowledge with a sense of curiosity about the unknown. It is a battle with fear, but also a path to growth. This pursuit, I believe, is what will enrich both my business and my life.
