素直さと疑う目、どちらも必要な時代に

子どもの頃に聞いた「ウサギとカメ」の話。スタートダッシュを決めたウサギが途中で油断して昼寝をしてしまい、コツコツと歩き続けたカメに負けてしまうというおなじみの話である。多くの人がそこから「地道に努力を続けることの大切さ」を学んだことだろう。

ところが、ある本にこう書かれていた。

「ウサギはなぜ負けたのか？　それはカメを見たからだ」と。

なるほどと思わされた。カメに気を取られたウサギは、自分のゴールを見失った。対してカメは、ウサギを気にせず、ただゴールだけを見つめて進んでいた。まさに目標への集中力と継続力の違いが結果を分けたのだ。

人生は短距離走ではなくマラソンである。途中で誰かを追い越したところで、それ自体に大きな意味はない。大切なのは、ブレずに自分のペースで歩き続けること。改めてこの童話の深さを感じた。

一方で、「アリとキリギリス」の話もある。一生懸命に働いたアリと、遊んで過ごしたキリギリス。冬になって苦労の差が出る……と思いきや、最近では「アリたちは過労死し、キリギリスが蓄えを手に入れて生き延びた」なんてブラックユーモア的なバージョンもある。

どちらの話にしても、どう受け取るかは読み手次第である。同じストーリーでも、皮肉として読むか、教訓として受け取るかで、その価値は大きく変わる。素直な心で向き合えば、童話の中にも深い学びがある。

ただ、素直さが通用しない世の中になってきたのも事実である。先日、その本の著者とFacebookでつながり、喜んでいた。ところがメッセンジャーからLINEに誘導され、最終的には金融庁の名前を語るサイトへの登録を勧められた。調べたところ、巧妙な詐欺であった。詐欺師たちは、善意や信頼を逆手に取り、日々手口を磨いている。恐ろしいものだ。

子どもの頃、近所の家には玄関の鍵などかかっていなかった。友達が留守でも、勝手に上がり込んで待っていたこともある。そんな無防備な信頼が当たり前だった時代が、どれほど幸せだったかと思う。

時代は変わった。だが、それでも私は、人を信じ、正直に、まっすぐに生きる価値を信じたい。童話の教訓も、現代の現実も、すべては自分の受け取り方次第である。これからも素直な心と、冷静な目の両方を持って歩んでいきたい。 In an Era That Demands Both Openness and a Critical Eye

When I was a child, I heard the story of "The Tortoise and the Hare." The hare dashed ahead at the start but became overconfident and took a nap, only to be overtaken by the slow and steady tortoise. Most people learned from this story the importance of consistent, steady effort.

However, I once read a different interpretation in a book:"Why did the hare lose? Because he looked at the tortoise."That made a lot of sense to me. The hare lost sight of his own goal because he got distracted by the tortoise. In contrast, the tortoise paid no attention to the hare and simply focused on reaching the finish line. It was the difference in focus and persistence that determined the outcome.

Life is not a sprint—it’s a marathon. Overtaking someone along the way means little in the long run. What matters most is continuing steadily, without losing sight of your own pace and direction. I was reminded of the depth of this seemingly simple fable.

On the other hand, there's also the story of "The Ant and the Grasshopper." The ant works hard, while the grasshopper plays all summer. When winter comes, their fates diverge… or so we were taught. Recently, I saw a dark-humor version that went: “The ants died of overwork, while the grasshopper survived with his savings.”

Whether it’s the tortoise and the hare or the ant and the grasshopper, the meaning we take depends entirely on the reader. The same story can be seen as a satire or as a moral lesson. If we approach it with an open heart, even a children’s tale can offer profound insights.

But it’s also true that we live in a world where openness alone no longer suffices. Just the other day, I connected with the author of that book on Facebook and was delighted. But then, I was led through Messenger to LINE, and eventually prompted to register on a website claiming affiliation with Japan’s Financial Services Agency. Upon investigation, I realized it was an elaborate scam. These fraudsters exploit trust and goodwill, constantly refining their techniques. It’s terrifying.

When I was a child, people didn’t even lock their front doors. I’d sometimes walk into a friend’s house and wait if they weren’t home. Such casual trust was just part of life, and I now see how precious that era was.

Times have changed. Still, I want to continue believing in the value of trust, honesty, and sincerity. Whether it’s the lessons in fairy tales or the harshness of modern reality, it all depends on how we choose to perceive it. I want to keep walking forward with both an open heart and a discerning eye.
