経営者には即断即決が求められる。日々の経営判断の連続の中で、決断力は重要な資質だ。しかし、その本質はなんだろう？
決断とは、単に「選ぶこと」ではない。「決めて、断つこと」である。何かを選ぶということは、同時に何かを捨てることでもある。多くの人が決断を迷うのは、「断つこと」が怖いからだ。選ばなかった道には、別の可能性があったかもしれないという迷いが生じる。しかし、経営の世界では、決断を先延ばしにすることこそが最大のリスクになる。行動が遅れれば、機会を失うからだ。
私自身、事業を展開する中で数多くの決断をしてきた。そのたびに意識するのは、「何を優先し、何を手放すべきか」という視点である。すべてを手に入れることはできない。だからこそ、本当に大切なものに集中するために、不要なものを切り捨てる勇気が必要だ。
たとえば、新規事業に集中するために、長年続けてきたビジネスを手放すこともある。あるいは、短期的な利益を捨てて、長期的な成長を優先することもある。決断とは、「何をするか」だけでなく、「何をやめるか」を決めることでもあるのだ。
この考え方は、個人の成長にも当てはまる。忙しい日々の中で、本当にやるべきことを見極めるには、「やめること」を決める必要がある。無駄な習慣、意味のない会議、優先度の低い仕事。それらを断ち切ることで、より大きな成果を生み出せる。スティーブ・ジョブズが同じ服を着続けたのも、服選びの時間を不要と判断し、捨てたからだ。時間は有限であり、すべてをこなせるわけではない。
とはいえ、即断即決が常に正しいとは限らない。時には「鈍く考える」習慣も必要だ。特に、VUCA時代と呼ばれる先行き不透明な時代においては、複雑な問題に直面した際、じっくりと状況を分析し、多角的な視点から検討することも重要である。
経営判断には、日常的な些細な判断から、会社の将来を左右する重大な決定まで、多岐にわたるものがある。それぞれの状況に応じて、即断即決すべきか、慎重に検討すべきかを見極める力が求められる。また、決断のスピードだけでなく、その質も重要だ。素早い決断でも、クオリティが低ければ意味がない。迅速さと慎重さのバランスを取りながら、最適な判断を下す力こそが経営者に必要とされる資質である。
結局のところ、経営者の仕事の本質は「意思決定」にある。それは単なる機械的な判断ではなく、リスクを伴う挑戦的な仕事だ。重要なのは、問題への答えを出すことだけでなく、問題を正しく理解すること。ビジョン、エネルギー、資源を総動員し、最良の成果を生み出すことこそが経営の醍醐味である。
「決めて、断つ」。このシンプルな原則を意識しつつ、状況に応じた柔軟な判断力を磨くこと。それこそが、真の経営者としての力を生み出す源泉となるのだ。

Decision-making means to “choose and cut off.”As a business leader, one is expected to make prompt and decisive decisions. In the endless stream of daily management choices, decisiveness is a crucial quality. But what is the true essence of decision-making?
Decision-making is not merely about “choosing.” It is about “choosing and cutting off.” Selecting something inherently means letting go of something else. Many people struggle with making decisions because they fear “cutting off” other possibilities. The hesitation comes from the thought that the path not taken might have led to different opportunities. However, in the world of business, postponing a decision is often the greatest risk. Delaying action means losing opportunities.
Throughout my own business journey, I have made countless decisions. Each time, I consciously consider what should be prioritized and what should be let go. We cannot have everything. That is precisely why we must have the courage to eliminate the unnecessary and focus on what truly matters.
For example, in order to concentrate on a new business venture, I may need to let go of a long-running enterprise. At times, I may sacrifice short-term profits to prioritize long-term growth. Decision-making is not only about deciding what to do but also about deciding what to stop doing.
This mindset applies not only to business but also to personal growth. In our busy lives, identifying what truly deserves our time requires us to decide what to eliminate. Useless habits, meaningless meetings, low-priority tasks—by cutting them off, we create room for greater achievements. Steve Jobs famously wore the same outfit every day because he chose to eliminate the time spent on deciding what to wear. Time is limited; we cannot do everything.
That said, making quick decisions is not always the right approach. At times, adopting the habit of “thinking slowly” is necessary. Especially in today’s VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) world, when faced with complex challenges, it is essential to take a step back, analyze situations thoroughly, and evaluate them from multiple perspectives.
Business decisions range from trivial everyday choices to major strategic decisions that determine the future of a company. A true leader must develop the ability to discern when to act swiftly and when to deliberate carefully. Speed alone is not enough—decision quality matters just as much. A fast but poor decision is meaningless. Balancing speed with careful consideration is what makes an exceptional leader.
Ultimately, the essence of a business leader’s role lies in decision-making. It is not just a mechanical process but a challenging task that involves risk. What matters is not only arriving at an answer but also understanding the problem correctly. Business leadership is about mobilizing vision, energy, and resources to produce the best possible outcome.
“Choose and cut off.” By keeping this simple principle in mind while cultivating the ability to make flexible decisions depending on the situation, one can develop true leadership.
